The Republic of Latvia is a country in the middle of the Baltic states, located in North-eastern Europe and on the east coast of the Baltic Sea.

Latvia is bordered to the north by Estonia, to the south by Lithuania, to the east by the Russian Federation, to the southeast by Belarus and it shares a maritime border with Sweden to the west.

Latvia has a population of 1.9 million people as of 2019 and a territory of 64,589 km2 (24,938 sq mi). Latvia’s capital is Riga, which is the biggest city in the Baltic states and is well-known for its Art Nouveau architecture and wooden buildings.

The official language is Latvian, which is considered one of the oldest languages in Europe. Latvia is a member state of the European Union, NATO and part of the Schengen Area since 2004 joining Eurozone in 2014.

In 2018 Latvia celebrated its centenary.
